  23. Maximum memory used to reassemble IP fragments. When
  24. ipfrag_high_thresh bytes of memory is allocated for this purpose,
  25. the fragment handler will toss packets until ipfrag_low_thresh
  26. is reached.
  27. ipfrag_low_thresh - INTEGER

  29. ipfrag_time - INTEGER
  30. Time in seconds to keep an IP fragment in memory.
  31. ipfrag_secret_interval - INTEGER
  32. Regeneration interval (in seconds) of the hash secret (or lifetime
  33. for the hash secret) for IP fragments.
  34. Default: 600
  35. INET peer storage:
  36. inet_peer_threshold - INTEGER
  37. The approximate size of the storage. Starting from this threshold
  38. entries will be thrown aggressively. This threshold also determines
  39. entries' time-to-live and time intervals between garbage collection
  40. passes. More entries, less time-to-live, less GC interval.
  41. inet_peer_minttl - INTEGER
  42. Minimum time-to-live of entries. Should be enough to cover fragment
  43. time-to-live on the reassembling side. This minimum time-to-live is
  44. guaranteed if the pool size is less than inet_peer_threshold.
  45. Measured in jiffies(1).
  46. inet_peer_maxttl - INTEGER
  47. Maximum time-to-live of entries. Unused entries will expire after
  48. this period of time if there is no memory pressure on the pool (i.e.
  49. when the number of entries in the pool is very small).
  50. Measured in jiffies(1).
  51. inet_peer_gc_mintime - INTEGER
  52. Minimum interval between garbage collection passes. This interval is
  53. in effect under high memory pressure on the pool.
  54. Measured in jiffies(1).
  55. inet_peer_gc_maxtime - INTEGER
  56. Minimum interval between garbage collection passes. This interval is
  57. in effect under low (or absent) memory pressure on the pool.
  58. Measured in jiffies(1).
  59. TCP variables:
  60. tcp_abc - INTEGER
  61. Controls Appropriate Byte Count defined in RFC3465. If set to
  62. 0 then does congestion avoid once per ack. 1 is conservative
  63. value, and 2 is more agressive.
  64. tcp_syn_retries - INTEGER
  65. Number of times initial SYNs for an active TCP connection attempt
  66. will be retransmitted. Should not be higher than 255. Default value
  67. is 5, which corresponds to ~180seconds.
  68. tcp_synack_retries - INTEGER
  69. Number of times SYNACKs for a passive TCP connection attempt will
  70. be retransmitted. Should not be higher than 255. Default value
  71. is 5, which corresponds to ~180seconds.
  72. tcp_keepalive_time - INTEGER
  73. How often TCP sends out keepalive messages when keepalive is enabled.
  74. Default: 2hours.
  75. tcp_keepalive_probes - INTEGER
  76. How many keepalive probes TCP sends out, until it decides that the
  77. connection is broken. Default value: 9.
  78. tcp_keepalive_intvl - INTEGER
  79. How frequently the probes are send out. Multiplied by
  80. tcp_keepalive_probes it is time to kill not responding connection,
  81. after probes started. Default value: 75sec i.e. connection
  82. will be aborted after ~11 minutes of retries.
  83. tcp_retries1 - INTEGER
  84. How many times to retry before deciding that something is wrong
  85. and it is necessary to report this suspicion to network layer.
  86. Minimal RFC value is 3, it is default, which corresponds
  87. to ~3sec-8min depending on RTO.
  88. tcp_retries2 - INTEGER
  89. How may times to retry before killing alive TCP connection.
  90. RFC1122 says that the limit should be longer than 100 sec.
  91. It is too small number. Default value 15 corresponds to ~13-30min
  92. depending on RTO.
  93. tcp_orphan_retries - INTEGER
  94. How may times to retry before killing TCP connection, closed
  95. by our side. Default value 7 corresponds to ~50sec-16min
  96. depending on RTO. If you machine is loaded WEB server,
  97. you should think about lowering this value, such sockets
  98. may consume significant resources. Cf. tcp_max_orphans.
  99. tcp_fin_timeout - INTEGER
  100. Time to hold socket in state FIN-WAIT-2, if it was closed
  101. by our side. Peer can be broken and never close its side,
  102. or even died unexpectedly. Default value is 60sec.
  103. Usual value used in 2.2 was 180 seconds, you may restore
  104. it, but remember that if your machine is even underloaded WEB server,
  105. you risk to overflow memory with kilotons of dead sockets,
  106. FIN-WAIT-2 sockets are less dangerous than FIN-WAIT-1,
  107. because they eat maximum 1.5K of memory, but they tend
  108. to live longer. Cf. tcp_max_orphans.
  109. tcp_max_tw_buckets - INTEGER
  110. Maximal number of timewait sockets held by system simultaneously.
  111. If this number is exceeded time-wait socket is immediately destroyed
  112. and warning is printed. This limit exists only to prevent
  113. simple DoS attacks, you _must_ not lower the limit artificially,
  114. but rather increase it (probably, after increasing installed memory),
  115. if network conditions require more than default value.
  116. tcp_tw_recycle - BOOLEAN
  117. Enable fast recycling TIME-WAIT sockets. Default value is 0.
  118. It should not be changed without advice/request of technical
  119. experts.
  120. tcp_tw_reuse - BOOLEAN
  121. Allow to reuse TIME-WAIT sockets for new connections when it is
  122. safe from protocol viewpoint. Default value is 0.
  123. It should not be changed without advice/request of technical
  124. experts.
  125. tcp_max_orphans - INTEGER
  126. Maximal number of TCP sockets not attached to any user file handle,
  127. held by system. If this number is exceeded orphaned connections are
  128. reset immediately and warning is printed. This limit exists
  129. only to prevent simple DoS attacks, you _must_ not rely on this
  130. or lower the limit artificially, but rather increase it
  131. (probably, after increasing installed memory),
  132. if network conditions require more than default value,
  133. and tune network services to linger and kill such states
  134. more aggressively. Let me to remind again: each orphan eats
  135. up to ~64K of unswappable memory.
  136. tcp_abort_on_overflow - BOOLEAN
  137. If listening service is too slow to accept new connections,
  138. reset them. Default state is FALSE. It means that if overflow
  139. occurred due to a burst, connection will recover. Enable this
  140. option _only_ if you are really sure that listening daemon
  141. cannot be tuned to accept connections faster. Enabling this
  142. option can harm clients of your server.
  143. tcp_syncookies - BOOLEAN
  144. Only valid when the kernel was compiled with CONFIG_SYNCOOKIES
  145. Send out syncookies when the syn backlog queue of a socket
  146. overflows. This is to prevent against the common 'syn flood attack'
  147. Default: FALSE
  148. Note, that syncookies is fallback facility.
  149. It MUST NOT be used to help highly loaded servers to stand
  150. against legal connection rate. If you see synflood warnings
  151. in your logs, but investigation shows that they occur
  152. because of overload with legal connections, you should tune
  153. another parameters until this warning disappear.
  154. See: tcp_max_syn_backlog, tcp_synack_retries, tcp_abort_on_overflow.
  155. syncookies seriously violate TCP protocol, do not allow
  156. to use TCP extensions, can result in serious degradation
  157. of some services (f.e. SMTP relaying), visible not by you,
  158. but your clients and relays, contacting you. While you see
  159. synflood warnings in logs not being really flooded, your server
  160. is seriously misconfigured.
  161. tcp_stdurg - BOOLEAN
  162. Use the Host requirements interpretation of the TCP urg pointer field.
  163. Most hosts use the older BSD interpretation, so if you turn this on
  164. Linux might not communicate correctly with them.
  165. Default: FALSE
  166. tcp_max_syn_backlog - INTEGER
  167. Maximal number of remembered connection requests, which are
  168. still did not receive an acknowledgment from connecting client.
  169. Default value is 1024 for systems with more than 128Mb of memory,
  170. and 128 for low memory machines. If server suffers of overload,
  171. try to increase this number.
  172. tcp_window_scaling - BOOLEAN
  173. Enable window scaling as defined in RFC1323.
  174. tcp_timestamps - BOOLEAN
  175. Enable timestamps as defined in RFC1323.
  176. tcp_sack - BOOLEAN
  177. Enable select acknowledgments (SACKS).
  178. tcp_fack - BOOLEAN
  179. Enable FACK congestion avoidance and fast retransmission.
  180. The value is not used, if tcp_sack is not enabled.
  181. tcp_dsack - BOOLEAN
  182. Allows TCP to send "duplicate" SACKs.
  183. tcp_ecn - BOOLEAN
  184. Enable Explicit Congestion Notification in TCP.
  185. tcp_reordering - INTEGER
  186. Maximal reordering of packets in a TCP stream.

  188. tcp_retrans_collapse - BOOLEAN
  189. Bug-to-bug compatibility with some broken printers.
  190. On retransmit try to send bigger packets to work around bugs in
  191. certain TCP stacks.
  192. tcp_wmem - vector of 3 INTEGERs: min, default, max
  193. min: Amount of memory reserved for send buffers for TCP socket.
  194. Each TCP socket has rights to use it due to fact of its birth.
  195. Default: 4K
  196. default: Amount of memory allowed for send buffers for TCP socket
  197. by default. This value overrides net.core.wmem_default used
  198. by other protocols, it is usually lower than net.core.wmem_default.

  218. tcp_mem - vector of 3 INTEGERs: min, pressure, max
  219. low: below this number of pages TCP is not bothered about its
  220. memory appetite.
  221. pressure: when amount of memory allocated by TCP exceeds this number
  222. of pages, TCP moderates its memory consumption and enters memory
  223. pressure mode, which is exited when memory consumption falls
  224. under "low".
  225. high: number of pages allowed for queueing by all TCP sockets.
  226. Defaults are calculated at boot time from amount of available
  227. memory.
  228. tcp_app_win - INTEGER
  229. Reserve max(window/2^tcp_app_win, mss) of window for application
  230. buffer. Value 0 is special, it means that nothing is reserved.
  231. Default: 31
  232. tcp_adv_win_scale - INTEGER
  233. Count buffering overhead as bytes/2^tcp_adv_win_scale
  234. (if tcp_adv_win_scale > 0) or bytes-bytes/2^(-tcp_adv_win_scale),
  235. if it is <= 0.
  236. Default: 2
  237. tcp_rfc1337 - BOOLEAN
  238. If set, the TCP stack behaves conforming to RFC1337. If unset,
  239. we are not conforming to RFC, but prevent TCP TIME_WAIT
  240. assassination.
  241. Default: 0
  242. tcp_low_latency - BOOLEAN
  243. If set, the TCP stack makes decisions that prefer lower
  244. latency as opposed to higher throughput. By default, this
  245. option is not set meaning that higher throughput is preferred.
  246. An example of an application where this default should be
  247. changed would be a Beowulf compute cluster.
  248. Default: 0
  249. tcp_tso_win_divisor - INTEGER
  250. This allows control over what percentage of the congestion window
  251. can be consumed by a single TSO frame.
  252. The setting of this parameter is a choice between burstiness and
  253. building larger TSO frames.
  254. Default: 3
  255. tcp_frto - BOOLEAN
  256. Enables F-RTO, an enhanced recovery algorithm for TCP retransmission
  257. timeouts. It is particularly beneficial in wireless environments
  258. where packet loss is typically due to random radio interference
  259. rather than intermediate router congestion.
  260. tcp_congestion_control - STRING
  261. Set the congestion control algorithm to be used for new
  262. connections. The algorithm "reno" is always available, but
  263. additional choices may be available based on kernel configuration.
  264. somaxconn - INTEGER
  265. Limit of socket listen() backlog, known in userspace as SOMAXCONN.
  266. Defaults to 128. See also tcp_max_syn_backlog for additional tuning
  267. for TCP sockets.
  268. IP Variables:
  269. ip_local_port_range - 2 INTEGERS
  270. Defines the local port range that is used by TCP and UDP to
  271. choose the local port. The first number is the first, the
  272. second the last local port number. Default value depends on
  273. amount of memory available on the system:
  274. > 128Mb 32768-61000
  275. < 128Mb 1024-4999 or even less.
  276. This number defines number of active connections, which this
  277. system can issue simultaneously to systems not supporting
  278. TCP extensions (timestamps). With tcp_tw_recycle enabled
  279. (i.e. by default) range 1024-4999 is enough to issue up to
  280. 2000 connections per second to systems supporting timestamps.
  281. ip_nonlocal_bind - BOOLEAN
  282. If set, allows processes to bind() to non-local IP addresses,
  283. which can be quite useful - but may break some applications.
  284. Default: 0
  285. ip_dynaddr - BOOLEAN
  286. If set non-zero, enables support for dynamic addresses.
  287. If set to a non-zero value larger than 1, a kernel log
  288. message will be printed when dynamic address rewriting
  289. occurs.

  291. icmp_echo_ignore_all - BOOLEAN
  292. If set non-zero, then the kernel will ignore all ICMP ECHO
  293. requests sent to it.

  359. Integer value used to differentiate the devices by the medium they
  360. are attached to. Two devices can have different id values when
  361. the broadcast packets are received only on one of them.

  364. Currently, it is used to change the proxy_arp behavior:

  406. rp_filter - BOOLEAN
  407. 1 - do source validation by reversed path, as specified in RFC1812
  408. Recommended option for single homed hosts and stub network
  409. routers. Could cause troubles for complicated (not loop free)
  410. networks running a slow unreliable protocol (sort of RIP),
  411. or using static routes.
  412. 0 - No source validation.
  413. conf/all/rp_filter must also be set to TRUE to do source validation
  414. on the interface
  415. Default value is 0. Note that some distributions enable it
  416. in startup scripts.
  417. arp_filter - BOOLEAN
  418. 1 - Allows you to have multiple network interfaces on the same
  419. subnet, and have the ARPs for each interface be answered
  420. based on whether or not the kernel would route a packet from
  421. the ARP'd IP out that interface (therefore you must use source
  422. based routing for this to work). In other words it allows control
  423. of which cards (usually 1) will respond to an arp request.
  424. 0 - (default) The kernel can respond to arp requests with addresses
  425. from other interfaces. This may seem wrong but it usually makes
  426. sense, because it increases the chance of successful communication.
  427. IP addresses are owned by the complete host on Linux, not by
  428. particular interfaces. Only for more complex setups like load-
  429. balancing, does this behaviour cause problems.
  430. arp_filter for the interface will be enabled if at least one of
  431. conf/{all,interface}/arp_filter is set to TRUE,
  432. it will be disabled otherwise
  433. arp_announce - INTEGER
  434. Define different restriction levels for announcing the local
  435. source IP address from IP packets in ARP requests sent on
  436. interface:
  437. 0 - (default) Use any local address, configured on any interface
  438. 1 - Try to avoid local addresses that are not in the target's
  439. subnet for this interface. This mode is useful when target
  440. hosts reachable via this interface require the source IP
  441. address in ARP requests to be part of their logical network
  442. configured on the receiving interface. When we generate the
  443. request we will check all our subnets that include the
  444. target IP and will preserve the source address if it is from
  445. such subnet. If there is no such subnet we select source
  446. address according to the rules for level 2.
  447. 2 - Always use the best local address for this target.
  448. In this mode we ignore the source address in the IP packet
  449. and try to select local address that we prefer for talks with
  450. the target host. Such local address is selected by looking
  451. for primary IP addresses on all our subnets on the outgoing
  452. interface that include the target IP address. If no suitable
  453. local address is found we select the first local address
  454. we have on the outgoing interface or on all other interfaces,
  455. with the hope we will receive reply for our request and
  456. even sometimes no matter the source IP address we announce.
  457. The max value from conf/{all,interface}/arp_announce is used.
  458. Increasing the restriction level gives more chance for
  459. receiving answer from the resolved target while decreasing
  460. the level announces more valid sender's information.
  461. arp_ignore - INTEGER
  462. Define different modes for sending replies in response to
  463. received ARP requests that resolve local target IP addresses:
  464. 0 - (default): reply for any local target IP address, configured
  465. on any interface
  466. 1 - reply only if the target IP address is local address
  467. configured on the incoming interface
  468. 2 - reply only if the target IP address is local address
