  1. Linux 2.4 Sound Changes
  2. 2000-September-25
  3. Christoph Hellwig, <hch@infradead.org>
  4. === isapnp support
  5. The Linux 2.4 Kernel does have reliable in-kernel isapnp support.
  6. Some drivers (sb.o, ad1816.o awe_wave.o) do now support automatically
  7. detecting and configuring isapnp devices.
  8. If you have a not yet supported isapnp soundcard, mail me the content
  9. of '/proc/isapnp' on your system and some information about your card
  10. and its driver(s) so I can try to get isapnp working for it.
  11. === soundcard resources on kernel commandline
  12. Before Linux 2.4 you had to specify the resources for sounddrivers
  13. statically linked into the kernel at compile time
  14. (in make config/menuconfig/xconfig). In Linux 2.4 the resources are
  15. now specified at the boot-time kernel commandline (e.g. the lilo
  16. 'append=' line or everything that's after the kernel name in grub).
  17. Read the Configure.help entry for your card for the parameters.
  18. === softoss is gone
  19. In Linux 2.4 the softoss in-kernel software synthesizer is no more aviable.
  20. Use a user space software synthesizer like timidity instead.
  21. === /dev/sndstat and /proc/sound are gone
  22. In older Linux versions those files exported some information about the
  23. OSS/Free configuration to userspace. In Linux 2.3 they were removed because
  24. they did not support the growing number of pci soundcards and there were
  25. some general problems with this interface.
